Now is the time for land use discussion

Gallatin National Forest officials have reacted reasonably to a court ruling that the forest’s travel plan violated provisions in the Wilderness Study Act.

The forest is closing some 180 miles of trail in the Hyalite-Porcupine-Buffalo Wilderness Study Area to mountain bikers and 30 miles of trail to motorcyclists. Those changes represent a 75 percent and 43 percent reduction in trail access respectively.
